The Italian rider was in Lanzarote for a few days training before competing and winning in the World Tour event held in Fuerteventura
The sea, competition and Francesco Cappuzzo have been connected for more than 20 years. At the age of three he was already on a windsurfing board under the supervision of his father – a happy childhood but one that soon awakened his competitive spirit. Lanzarote is one of his favourite destinations to train and compete. Before competing at the highest level in the World Cup event held in Fuerteventura, the rider spent a few days training in Lanzarote, an island that is close to his heart.
“My life is on the water, competing with the best in the world.”
He began competing in windsurfing at the age of six, focusing on freestyle and achieving multiple titles, including two junior world runner-up finishes and eight Italian junior championships. He also placed in the top ten in the PWA world rankings between 2017 and 2019. In 2012, he took up kitesurfing and competed on the Wave Tour, winning the Italian title and a place in the top five on the GKA World Tour in 2018 and 2019.
The 2020 pandemic brought significant changes, during which he became interested in wingfoiling. In 2021, he won the European title and was runner-up for the world title. In 2022, he achieved significant results in wingfoiling, including his first World Cup victory and numerous podium finishes.
“Lanzarote is the perfect place to train and compete, with wind, waves, good food and great people”
In 2023, he won the world wingfoiling title in FreeFly-Slalom. So far this season Francesco has already won two World Tour events: in April he took the victory in Leucate, France and a few weeks ago he climbed to the top of the podium in the event held in Fuerteventura in the FreeFly-Slalom modality.
Francesco is passionate about discovering new places and considers Lanzarote to be “the perfect place to train and compete, with wind, waves, good food and great people”. The Italian athlete participated in the European Windsurfing Championship and the Wingfoil World Cup event, both held at Playa de las Cucharas, Costa Teguise.
This year, his goal is to win the World Championship in the Race category. To achieve this, he knows he need to continue training at the highest level, because, as he says himself, “my life is in the water competing with the best in the world”.
