The Lithuanian triathlete is looking to secure her place at the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii
Lithuanian athlete Indre Barkute shares with us why she has chosen Lanzarote as a destination to prepare for her competitions over the last few years and what additional benefits the island brings to her training. Although she started her athletics career at an early age, she took a break to study and work before returning her focus to her passion for sport. Her current goal is to secure a spot to compete at the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii in 2024.
“Lanzarote is an island that grabs you”
Indre has been involved in sport since childhood, excelling in athletics and even making the Lithuanian national team in the 400m hurdles. However, she took a temporary break from competition due to academic and work commitments. Upon her return, she entered into popular athletics, quickly winning several victories. Her transition to triathlon came after she discovered cycling, which captivated her and led her to fall in love with the three-segment sport.
“It’s a perfect island; it’s a paradise for triathlon”
After her first Olympic triathlon, Indre set her sights on improving in this discipline, quickly excelling in various competitions and eventually focusing on the long-distance format. Although she has participated in several IRONMAN competitions including in Lanzarote, she has not yet achieved her goal of securing a spot in the Kona competition. However, she is completely certain that she will make it soon.
Lanzarote has become her favourite destination to start the year, providing her with the peace and quiet she needs to prepare for the season, especially during the most demanding training period. Indre explains that she chooses Lanzarote for its peaceful atmosphere, stunning scenery and extensive road network, describing the island as “a place that grabs you and that you always want to come back to“. She also highlights the fact that Lanzarote is not only ideal for triathlon, but for any outdoor sport all year round, thanks to the peaceful, unique atmosphere that imbues its landscapes.
