Anne Haug: “In 2020 we learned to be more flexible when planning the season”
After not having competed in March in this year’s Miami Challenge because she tested positive for Covid the day before the race, German triathlete Anne Haug is now in perfect condition and is looking forward to defending her title at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona.
Anne and British Lucy Charles are Club La Santa’s first guests after the reopening of its facilities, and the fact is that the pair have been meeting in Lanzarote during their training for many years.
Anne is the current IRONMAN World Champion, after her triumph in 2019 when she overthrew the hegemony of Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf, winner of the previous four editions. The triathlete tells us that what happened last year “has to serve to make us more flexible when planning the season, and if a race is not held, you just have to continue training with motivation and be prepared for the next event.”
I mean what we learnt from last year is that we can´t make any plans any more so you have to be a little bit more flexible in terms of choosing for races because you never know if the race which is on the schedule is really happening
Her main motivation is to strive to be a better triathlete and she is her own best rival before each training session, something that has helped her to be one of the best long-distance triathletes today. Her main goal this season is to repeat her triumph in Kona, although she will participate in different events in the international circuit before then.
It is the better condition first because you can always train outside and it is tough and challenging because of the wind, it is hard so it is almost like training for the big races like Ironman Hawai.
The German triathlete has been an ambassador for Club La Santa for the last 6 years and says that coming to Lanzarote means “training in magnificent weather conditions and with the peace and quiet you need to prepare well.” She has a very strict training schedule, but in her spare time, she likes to visit the island and enjoy the local gastronomy.
Although a new edition of the Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote will be held on the 3rd of July, Anne can’t be on the starting line, but she has set her sights on it as a goal for future editions.
