Playa Grande, in Puerto del Carmen, once again experienced a memorable day with the celebration of the acclaimed Sailfish Lanzarote Open Water event on its eighth occasion. This event exceeded all expectations, thanks to its spectacular location right on the coast, right in the organizational heart and nerve center, just a few meters from the sea. On this occasion, swimmers of up to fourteen different nationalities participated, highlighting the notable presence of Irish and English competitors, in addition to local swimmers from Spain.
The installation of a platform on the sand of the beach itself made it possible for this open water party to be celebrated in its midst and in style. The fans experienced the whole competition very closely, encouraging each swimmer and creating an extraordinary atmosphere that was accompanied by 24ºC.
Thus, last Saturday, May 11, almost 600 participants gathered in this renewed competition that had already been raising expectations for several days with this staging, with the arch of the Sailfish Lanzarote Open Water regaling the swimmers as they entered the Atlantic.
The enviable water temperature of 19ºC was the best scenario in which Eduard Mannanov and Kennedy Hope were the best, completing the 5km with a record of 00:59:01 and 01:03:13, respectively, after starting with the first starting gun at 09:30 a.m.
In this queen category, Rachael and Elisa Razzi completed the women’s podium, as well as Andreu Jaén and Juan Carlos Vallejo, in the men’s category. While, in the 3.8km distance valid for the Canary Islands Open Water Cup, the champions were Yare Cocera and Anne Haug, followed by Naira Jaén and María Brito, in the women’s category; and Albert Mannanov and Gustavo Lourenco, in the men’s.
The classification of the 1.9 km race was also very interesting, where experienced swimmers met together with those looking to have their first experience in open water. Juan José Armas and Emilia Sasu emerged as winners in this distance, followed closely by Nora Morales and Lily Gopar, on the one hand, and by Matías Padrón and Xavi Llobet, on the other.
Special mention for the 800m category, which left great moments in the water, at the same time that the reserve team gained experience with the 400, 200, 100 and 50 m circuits.
The entire attraction was put into an awards ceremony that had the different circuits as a backdrop. The transfer of the celebration of this edition to the middle of Playa Grande, in the same arena where the swimmers compete, was welcomed with open arms by both participants and fans and spectators who did not want to miss any details.
The Sailfish Lanzarote Open Water once again places the island on the international map as a first-class sports tourism destination, with high-quality competitive tests in a privileged environment. This competition thus contributes to reinforcing Lanzarote’s position as a favourite destination for sports and travel lovers.
