Raúl Lecuona and Lydia Dant were the winners of the 36th edition of the race
Last weekend the Club La Santa Volcano Triathlon was held in Lanzarote. The oldest triathlon event in Spain, it saw the participation of nearly 500 athletes of 28 nationalities. Raúl Lecuona and Lydia Dant were the first to cross the finish line, but with very little margin over their rivals, offering everyone a great triathlon show throughout the day.
At 10:00 a.m. the start was given, and the 458 triathletes faced the first segment in Lake La Santa – a 1,500-meter swim during which the favourites began to position themselves in the leading spots. Spaniards Raul Lecuona and Adrian Coello exited the water at the head of the race. Amber Rombaut started by dominating in the women’s category and led the race in the water with a time of 21:00, followed by the British Kate Curran, just 53 seconds behind.
After a quick transition the participants fastened on their helmets and cleats to start the bike segment. The circuit prepared by the organization took the triathletes from La Santa to Famara, passing through places of great scenic beauty. Raul Lecuona toughed it out over the 40 km, pursued by Nicholas Ward and Oscar Hobson, who refused to make things easy for the Canarian triathlete. Lecuona finished the bike section in first position, followed closely by Ward. In the women’s category, Lydia Dant showed her strength and overtook her rivals, leading the competition at a very high pace, finishing this segment in first position and achieving a good advantage.
