Alejandro de la Guardia and Fernando Llaneza on one side, and Fátima Caballero and Carmen Pericet on the other side were the big winners of this edition.
The tenth edition of the Lanzarote Summer Challenge has not only shone as one of the most outstanding CrossFit events of the year at continental level but has also highlighted the island’s exceptional tourist qualities. With a unique environment, unbeatable weather conditions, delicious local cuisine and the warm welcome of its people, Lanzarote has established itself as an ideal destination for CrossFit lovers from all over Europe.
The great protagonists of this edition have been the champions of the RX category: Alejandro de la Guardia and Fernando Llaneza in the men’s category, and Fátima Caballero and Carmen Pericet in the women’s. Along with 224 athletes selected from almost a thousand aspirants offered a show of strength, endurance, speed, agility and balance, which attracted a record number of attendees.
Lanzarote, known for its all year round mild and sunny climate, provided the perfect setting for the competition. With an ideal temperature, participants and spectators enjoyed two intense days of outdoor sports, against the backdrop of the beautiful coastal scenery of the island’s capital.
This year, Lanzarote’s Summer Challenge surprised us with a new location in Marina Lanzarote, a modern marina that has joined the emblematic venues of El Islote de Fermina and Playa de El Reducto. These places, in addition to hosting demanding wods, allowed attendees to explore the natural beauty of Lanzarote, while enjoying the event. The expansion of venues not only improved the public experience, but also boosted local tourism, attracting visitors from all over the country.
The opening day began with a wod proposed by the organisation with an authentic triathlon test: 2,000 metres of rowing, 300 metres of swimming in the sea that took them from the impressive corner of El Islote de Fermina to the Arrecife Nautical Club and 3 kilometres of running with which they reached another emblematic location, the Castillo de San Gabriel. This first test, both demanding and exciting, was just the beginning of a weekend full of challenges. After the triathlon, Marina Lanzarote became the epicentre of the competition, where athletes demonstrated their strength and endurance, while the public enjoyed the good local cuisine offered in the area’s restaurants and bars.
The competition culminated with an exciting night race, another novelty of this edition, which kept the audience on the edge of their seats until late at night. Lanzarote’s Summer Challenge 2024 crowned its champions in various categories, highlighting the impressive performance of all participants. In addition to the RX winners, Adargoma Moreno and Ezequiel Henriquez took victory in the Master category, while Jonatan Iglesias and Oliver Viera triumphed in the Men’s Intermediate category. In the Women’s Intermediate category, the winners were Candela Arjona and Fátima Pascual. In the Men’s Scale category, Sebastián Orozco and Nayim Mohamed Mizzian were proclaimed winners, while Miriam Peña and Soledad Bolaños were the champions in the Women’s Scale category.
During the trophy presentation ceremony, the authorities present praised the positive impact of the event on the local economy and its contribution to promoting Lanzarote as a top-class tourist destination. Carmen Vicente, director of Lanzarote’s Summer Challenge 2024, expressed her satisfaction with the success of the event and stressed that they are already preparing new surprises for the next edition.
