Laurens Verluyten and Lydia Dant were crowned champions of this special edition of the oldest triathlon in Spain
Lanzarote, a sporting paradise that attracts thousands of athletes from all over the world, was once again the epicentre of the exciting world of triathlon with the Club La Santa Volcano Triathlon 2024. This event, which was celebrating its 40th anniversary, is much more than a sporting competition – it is a unique experience that brings together physical challenge and the island’s natural beauty and vibrant spirit.
Laurens Verluyten and Lydia Dant topped the podium in this historic edition of the Volcano Triathlon. With impressive times of 01:58:26 and 02:10:12 respectively, these athletes had demonstrated their skill and determination at every stage of the competition. More than 500 professional and amateur triathletes participated in this exciting contest, putting all they had into every stroke, stride and push of the pedal.
The event’s opening stage was the saltwater lagoon of the emblematic Club La Santa, which saw the participants throwing themselves into the challenge to the rhythm of the Lanzarote sunrise. The exciting swimming leg saw names such as Victor Manuel Gonzalez and Audrey Bams leading the way, setting the stage for what would turn out to be an action-packed, spirited day of competition.
The bike route took the triathletes through the stunning scenery of Lanzarote, from the crashing waves of Caleta de Caballo to the landscapes of Soo and Caleta de Famara. It was here that Laurens Verluyten and Lydia Dant took the reins, demonstrating their dominance on the tarmac and consolidating their position at the head of the pack.
But it was in the final 10 kilometres, during the run, that the champions really showed their mettle. Verluyten courageously defended his lead, while Dant showed her unrelenting stamina, securing victory with a comfortable lead over her closest competitors.
Meanwhile, spectators enjoyed the festive spirit of the Volcano Triathlon with music and activities that added a celebratory feel to the competition. Prior to the contest, the institutional cocktail and the Volcano Kids event highlighted Lanzarote’s commitment to sport and society.
